My last two weeks of vacation

Two more weeks until schools reopen for another year around here. That means only two more weeks of vacation and freedom for me – and only two more weeks of no salary coming in, thank goodness. I’m getting so tired of watching my bank balance get lower and lower.

And what do I have planned for the last two weeks of my summer holidays?

Well, I have two spa appointments booked (speaking of my dwindling bank balance!), one with DD and the other with my buddy BFJ. The latter will also involve a hotel sleepover and several restaurant meals and perhaps a couple of festive beverages, as usual.

My brother and sister-in-law will be visiting for a few days this week. Although they’ll be staying at my mom’s, I’m sure we’ll be spending a fair bit of time together. This may include several lunches or dinners and again, perhaps a couple of festive beverages, either at my mom’s or at my place.

Both BFJ and my brother are celebrating birthdays in the next two weeks. We don’t do expensive gifts or anything, but I do spend a lot of time at my favourite card shop to choose the perfect birthday cards for each of them. Then I actually MAIL the cards. I know, I know – that’s SO ten years ago – but I don’t care. I like getting birthday cards in the mail (actually, I like getting anything except bills in the mail. I particularly like getting cheques, but sadly, that is quite infrequent.)

I’m having a dinner party next weekend, then PG and I will be going to a friend’s barbecue the weekend after that.

At some point in there, I’ll be returning to my doctor to get the results of my recent back x-ray so that I’ll finally know (I hope!) what the hell is going on with my lower back and what I should be doing about it.

I’m still making a semi-valiant effort to lose the weight that I’d put on since last winter, the weight that I finally decided to do something about when PG and I got back from our road trip. For that, I have been faithfully working out at the gym three days a week, and power walking with DD most days in between (and sometimes also on the gym days). So far, I think I’ve lost eight pounds, but more importantly, I’m feeling much better. So that regimen will continue for the foreseeable future, with the likely addition of once-a-week Pilates and yoga classes – but only if I remember to register for those classes sometime within the next two weeks. (I’ve only been planning this for the past two weeks, but somehow, I keep forgetting to get online and register. At this rate, those classes will already be full! Freudian slip, maybe?)

Then, of course, there’s the regular grocery-shopping and cooking and housecleaning and doing laundry that I deal with year-round. I just spread it all out more during the summer, so I don’t tire myself out by doing two things in one day! There’s also time spent with PG, and with DD, and with my friends, most of which happens pretty spontaneously these days. In addition, there’s the time I spend reading or with my laptop … like right now. I have to keep THAT up, of course, addict that I have become!

And that’s how I’m planning to spend my last two weeks of vacation. Unless I come up with something better … or win the lottery.

Back at it

Yes, hello. I am here. I’ve not fallen off the edge of the earth or succumbed to my illness or anything dire like that. I’ve just been busy and not hanging about the intarnets much.

Actually, that’s not strictly true. I have been reading my favourite blogs regularly, and I have been downloading my favourite TV programs (currently Mad Men and old episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer). I’ve played a thousand games of Solitaire and Bubble Blaster, with a few Mah Jongg matches thrown in for variety. I’ve done a tonne of emailing with friends and family, not to mention useless research on such topics as celebrities who’ve had bad plastic surgery. And I haven’t really been exceptionally, unusually busy otherwise. But I have been sick, and I suppose I’ve just needed some down time to recover. And of course, by not feeling well, I haven’t exactly been thinking profound thoughts or observing strange behaviours in others or even doing weird and amusing activities myself – you know, the blogworthy stuff that we all write about.

After showing up for work only three days last week, and only once to my gym (which MUST be why I am still struggling with man push-ups), my energy is starting to come back. Over the weekend, I cleaned my whole house, prepared a lovely Thanksgiving dinner for nine people, cleaned up my garden and put away my patio furniture for the winter, did lots of laundry, drove PG around when his car wouldn’t start, and attended another Thanksgiving dinner at the home of friends.

After all that, I had to go to work today to relax. I might even work every day this week. I’ll just have to see how much I need to relax …

Busy, busy

images15I’ve been on Spring Break all week. It has rained pretty much all week. Is there a correlation perhaps?

Anyway, I have rarely participated in that well-known Canadian ritual known as “Going away somewhere warm for Spring Break”, and obviously I didn’t this year either. I don’t know why that is.

Maybe it’s because I have so darn much to do at home. So far this week I have: -slept in every single morning
-drank half a pot of coffee all by myself every single morning
-spent literally hours each day reading blogs or writing my own or emailing or just plain surfing the intarnets
-baked banana bread
-gone grocery shopping
-vacuumed and dusted the house
-cleaned two bathrooms
-downloaded about 200 more songs to my iPod
-gone back to the store for batteries
-gone out for one brunch and one dinner
-won 20$ at the casino, gambling with my mom’s money
-done 5 loads of laundry (on two different days)
-run and emptied the dishwasher three times
-collected the mail only twice
-gone back to the store yet again for hairspray
-watched three hockey games on TV (and have fallen asleep on the couch each time)
-somehow deleted the email program on my laptop
-with DD’s help, reinstalled said email program
-whined enough to DD that she gave me her old external hard drive and then she backed up all my computer files for me
-gone back to the damn store for the fourth time to pick up a bag of candy and a bunch of magazines as a birthday gift
-researched this summer’s proposed trip to Greece (I’m THIS CLOSE to booking the flights)
-bought new runners and a new flat-iron (different store, thank goodness)
-gone for a long walk most days to break the runners in (depending upon how hard it’s been raining)
-perfected my flat-iron technique
-phoned to make a dentist appointment
-managed to prepare two proper dinners
-regularly questioned DD about her progress on her thesis
-regularly dodged the evil looks she responded with

I mean, really, I haven’t had TIME to go away somewhere this week, have I?
